1. WHAT INSPIRED TALKIE WALKIE? HOW DID YOU DECIDE WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR TOURS IN PORTUGAL?
We are both architects, and when architects travel normally, it can be like an extension of our design practice or like an architecture class in the real world. We decided first to create an opportunity for architects to travel and learn about well-known Portuguese architecture, and from that experience, we started to expand to Portuguese art.
2. WHO ARE THREE PEOPLE YOU WOULD LOVE TO HOST ON ONE OF YOUR TOURS?
I think we would love to meet the architect Denise Scott Brown and the writer Clarice Lispector. We would also say the designer Stefan Sagmeister, though he has already been on one of our tours!
3. WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE MAKES PORTO SUCH AN INTERESTING ARCHITECTURAL DESTINATION?
Well, this city has been home to two Pritzker Prize winners, Álvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto Moura, and you can see the generations of influence from their past, and how their work has influenced the future of this city. Also, Portuguese architecture places a unique importance on the materials used, and the constructions techniques employed - some of which are ancestral - accentuate light and space.
4. APART FROM TALKIE WALKIE, YOU HAVE WORKED IN MANY DIFFERENT EDUCATIONAL CONTEXTS. WHAT IS ONE OF THE MOST INSPIRING PROJECTS YOU HAVE WORKED ON?
We've been developing this concept #archieducation (we borrowed it from Art Education!) within schools and museum and our art-educators team. The most inspiring projects are the ones where we have a group spanning 3 generations, and, using use some of the tools of the Architecture Discipline such as drawings, models, old postcards & photos, share old memories and debate the changing expectations of their land. We strongly believe because of these programs they become more aware citizens of the place they live in.
5. HAVE YOU ALWAYS LIVED IN PORTO? IF SO, WHAT CONTINUES TO INSPIRE YOU ABOUT IT? IF NOT, WHERE ARE YOU FROM ORIGINALLY AND WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO PORTO?
Matilde: We are from different regions of Portugal. I'm from Porto in the North, and Ana from Vila Franca de Xira, in the South. We have both lived in other dreamy cities, me in Paris and Ana in Madrid. Porto is my home, but for both of us, I can say that the famous architecture school was a reason to stay.
6. WHERE IS SOMEPLACE YOU HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO TRAVEL TO? WHO WOULD YOU TAKE WITH YOU?
Matilde: Ana and I, for a bunch of different reasons, have had the opportunity to travel a lot. Before Talkie-Walkie existed, I organised a lot of travels to Art Fairs abroad, and Ana worked with the Architects Chamber. Now, with Talkie-Walkie we are more dedicated to being home, but I think we still deserve a nice holiday now and then, so sometimes we go together for a nice trip somewhere. Next we want Wild Terrains to take us to Mexico!
