Mexico City: The Ultimate Taco Crawl

We couldn't visit Mexico City without doing our taco due diligence, so we visited more than 10 taco establishments in one day and seriously tested our taco eating limits. (Try eating 10 tacos in one afternoon...it is an accomplishment.)

To keep track of our favorites, we created an official taco scorecard and rated each taco on a scale of 1 to 5.

Categories on our scorecard included:

  • Tortilla resiliency
  • Tortilla taste
  • Meat flavor
  • Garnish selection
  • Garnish taste
  • Friendliness of taco staff
  • Establishment personality
  • Overall taco taste

Each category was scored on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 meaning we would move to Mexico City just to be able to eat this taco every day. We then summed all the category scores and took an average to get an overall taco score for each establishment.

With our scoring in mind, we've narrowed down our top 5 taco shops and created a DIY Mexico City taco crawl just for you. Take an UBER to each location or walk between them to help make room for the next taco. You're welcome :).

Super Tacos Chupacabra
Avenida México Coyoacán Sn Local 1, Xoco
Super Tacos Chupacabra started as a late night taco cart, but now has a permanent location underneath a highway overpass. Sounds shady - but it's really not and it's definitely worth the trek to make this your first taco pit stop.

Tacos Hola
Av. Amsterdam 135, Cuauhtémoc, Hipódromo
Tacos Hola is a hole-in-the-wall taco place that's filled with locals. It's tiny and a little grungy, but just go with it because their tacos are heavenly. We actually sat at the counter and got to watch the tail end of a soccer match which was super fun.

  • Tortilla resiliency: 5
  • Tortilla taste: 4
  • Meat: 4

El Parnita
Av. Yucatan 84, Roma Norte
El Parnita is a very trendy open-air restaurant that was packed with lively 20-somethings when we visited. We had to wait 20 minutes to get a table, but totally worth it. We ordered a fried shrimp taco that came with a freshly made tortilla and seriously spicy habanero salsa (you've been warned).

  • Meat: 5
  • Garnish selection: 4

TACO STOP #4

Taquería La Negra
Calle de Durango 258, Roma Norte
Recommended to us by local Mexico City food blogger Michelle On Bell, Taquería La Negra feels a bit like a chain restaurant but has a creative take on traditional taco combinations.

  • Tortilla taste: 3.5
  • Meat: 4
  • Garnish selection: 2

TACO STOP #5

Cirene
Calle Orizaba 87, Cuauhtemoc, Roma Norte
Cirene is actually a tiny seafood restaurant, but we think it has the best tacos in town and it's an awesome spot to wrap up your taco tour. Sit outside if the weather's nice and order a drink. Maybe even stay here and have dinner, too - it's that good.

What we ordered: the taco combo which included three tacos (shrimp, fish and steak)

Scorecard breakdown:

  • Tortilla resiliency: 5
  • Tortilla taste: 4
  • Meat: 5
  • Garnish selection: 4 (tacos were already garnished)
  • Garnish taste: 5
  • Friendliness of taco staff: 4
  • Establishment personality: 4.5
  • Overall taco taste: 5

Overall score = 4.56
